*NOTE: This is a kindergarten skill, but we’re sharing here because many preschoolers are advanced. If your preschooler is ready for this skill, feel free to teach it!
If you’d like to build your preschooler’s literacy skills, make sure that you don’t forget to help them read CVC words.
WHY PRESCHOOLERS SHOULD READ CVC WORDS
CVC words are consonant-vowel-consonant words in which the vowel always takes the short vowel sound. CVC words are an easy way for preschoolers to begin the process of learning how to put words together because they do not use any blended sounds. Preschoolers are ready to start learning CVC words once they have a strong understanding of phonemic awareness.
Learning CVC words is an important pre-reading skill. With CVC words, preschoolers are able to use their previous knowledge of letter sounds to read, and eventually form, simple words made up of just three individual sounds. This also teaches children that words are made up of a beginning, middle, and ending sound.
