When you’re hiring your preschool teachers, be sure to give them a copy of your preschool dress code. You’ll need one dress code for females, and another dress code for males. Feel free to edit as it works for you; this is an example below of our dress code we used for our preschool.

INTRODUCTION:

<Your Name Preschool> hereby adopts the following dress code, appearance, and behavior policy in order to:

  • Create a healthy, happy, drama-free work place where teachers can thrive
  • Maintain the professionalism that our preschool is known for
  • To create a unified look and feel, so that families feel comfortable and “at home” on our property and while interacting with our teachers

Our preschool requires that all teachers abide by the standards below.  This list is not all inclusive.  Continued violations of this policy is grounds for dismissal.

DRESS CODE (Generally between casual and dressy casual):

  • Tops:
    • OK: Slightly dressy tops (t-shirts OK every now & then)
    • NOT OK: Sleeveless tops, tops showing cleavage
  • Bottoms:
    • OK: Slacks, skirts, jeans, shorts to the top of the knee
    • NOT OK: Jeans with excessively frayed edges or holes
  • Shoes:
    • OK: Most shoes
    • NOT OK: Flip flops
  • Jewelry (not required to wear):
    • OK: Most jewelry
    • NOT OK: Sharp or excessively long jewelry

APPEARANCE:

  • Face: Make-up should be worn unless skin conditions exist
  • Hair: Hair should be styled attractively
  • Body: Body should be free of inappropriate odors; deodorant should be worn; perfumes should not be overwhelming
    • Please note: Tattoos must be hidden by clothing

BEHAVIOR: (Applies to anywhere on the property or at events)

  • No smoking, no swearing, and no gossiping (if you have concerns about any of the staff (including the director) you go directly to the director with your concerns.  No gossiping or talking bad about other staff members to other teachers.)

Hopefully as you create a preschool teacher dress code for your school, you’ll be able to create a no-drama atmosphere in your preschool.

Hi. So might be coming a child development in preschool. Would leggings be appropriate? Would tee shirts be appropriate?

Hi Carter! The dress code is up to you as the business owner. If you are adopting a business casual dress code, leggings and t-shirts wouldn’t normally be acceptable. Hope this helps thanks 🙂
