If you’d like to build your preschooler’s math skills, make sure that you don’t forget about helping them understand 1:1 correspondence.

Understand 1:1 Correspondence (Preschool Math Skills)

WHY PRESCHOOLERS NEED TO UNDERSTAND 1:1 CORRESPONDENCE

One to one correspondence is the idea that numbers correspond with specific quantities. It is the ability to match object to object or numbers to objects. Most preschoolers can count, but one to one correspondence is more then just memorization. It is the understanding of what the numbers really mean.

When a child has a strong understanding of one to one correspondence, they have mastered the four principles of counting. This foundation in early math skills gets them ready for more complicated skills such as skip counting and recognizing quantities by sight.
